The same view, but always changing

This view off Dallas Road in Victoria is always changing. Storms roll in and away, the tide rises and falls, birds migrate through the area, and folks come out to run or walk at different times of the day, the week, the season.

Seems like the view is always there, but the context is constantly changing.

Windy day on the breakwater

The breakwater at Ogden Point in Victoria is a great place to go for a walk. However, when it gets really windy, you can get pretty wet with the waves washing up and over to path at the top.

We had much more wind in the strait a couple of days ago. Pretty exciting.

Dear Lady

It seems that someone in my building has some concerns about what others leave behind, heh.

I found this note pasted on the wall of the elevator. Signed by TYVM, no less ;-)

October dragonfly

Who would have thought I'd see this on a park bench at Green Timbers at the end of October. (Not the greatest photo, but you get the idea).

I wonder what it was feeding on? Midges? Fruit flies?

Actually, it may not have been eating much. Even in the afternoon sun, it was hardly responsive, although its friends were still buzzing around. #poorthing

Weir at Green Timbers Park

This little weir manages the water levels in a small marsh at Green Timbers Park in Surrey, BC. It makes for quite the show of frolicking frogs in the spring, along with lots of bird life in the rushes that grow there. A very calm place in the middle of a growing city. #SurreyBC

Should helmets be mandatory on a bike? Perhaps not, but I'm sold on them now.

I remember thinking how stupid it was when helmets became mandatory on a motorcycle in BC. I'd just bought a Yamaha 175 trail bike and was looking forward to feeling the wind in my hair.

I felt the same years later, when they made them mandatory on bicycles too.

However...

A couple of weeks ago I managed to crack a bike helmet, while doing a header off the bike on a major road in Surrey, BC.  I'd just bought the helmet, so to say the least I was somewhat pi**ed - that is until I realized that it could have been my head ;-)

When I got up, I was somewhat dazed, and it took a while to come to my senses, but I managed to get off the road and into a parking lot to inspect the helmet and the bike. I had a few bruises on my arms and legs, but it seems the only read damage was to the helmet. Whew.

The accident resulted from just a momentary lapse of focus on my part. The results could have been much worse.

A mild headache started later in the day, so I headed over to the emergency ward  to make sure things were ok. It took 5 hours and a CT scan, but the doc assured me there was no blood pooling inside my skull, so I'd be fine. "It's a good thing you were wearing a helmet," he said.

Without the helmet, that crack might have been along the back of my skull. In fact, I remember thinking I was done for when I heard the crack when my head was hitting the pavement.

So I'm sold on helmets now. They won't prevent or reduce every injury on a bike, but they can sure help when your head is involved. And given all the control that blob of grey matter has on your body, it's best to give it all the protection you can.

Now, back to the bike.

If you don't use it, you lose it

Spent the day reviewing Google plus and my blog here at blogspot. How soon we forget.

A few months ago, ok, a year ago, I was pretty confident about the workflow with G+, Picasa and this blog, but now, not so much. I'm just testing a few things out with it all now, by posting via MarsEdit.

We'll see how it all goes over the next while, as I review all my various accounts across the net.
